New Pitney Bowes Model 4130 Offers Multi-Tasking Communication Capability

TRUMBULL, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 15, 2000--

Multi-Function Device Provides Better Management of
Desktop Copy, Fax and Print Stream

Pitney Bowes Office Systems, a division of Pitney Bowes Inc, (NYSE: PBI), today reinforced its position as the leading worldwide corporate fax supplier with the launch of the new Model 4130 a digital, multi-function desktop device (MFD) that combines high speed fax, copy, and network printing capability. With 3 second-per-page fax transmission and high-volume memory, the 4130 can perform multiple tasks such as printing and faxing at once, an essential feature for "power multi-taskers". The 4130's flexibility and performance beyond that of a stand-alone fax machine, makes it the perfect choice for corporate decision makers, including IT staff and office managers in retail, legal, and manufacturing environments who wish to provide their small and mid-size workgroups with an alternative output device for their print stream.

"The busy corporate environment of today demands an office machine that can do double, and even triple duty for its end users, " stated Dennis Roney, president, Pitney Bowes Office Systems. "The 4130 efficiently, sends, receives and prints documents, eliminating office bottlenecks while saving valuable space in smaller offices."

Today, to maximize productivity of every desktop in their network environments, many corporations seek the expertise of IT and MIS departments when making office equipment buying decisions. Although the 4130 is originally configured as a stand-alone product, optional PC and LAN capabilities allow the unit to function seamlessly with other office systems. The GDI or PCL 6 interface option connects the 4130 to a network or PC running Windows(R) 2000, NT, 98, 95 or 3.1 operating systems. Selectable print orientation, multiple paper sizes and print resolutions are quickly selected right from the user's desktop.

The 4130 handles high volume faxing easily with a fast 33.6Kbps, 3 second-per-page sending speed with JBIG transmission. JBIG, an advanced compression scheme, shrinks the document into small packets where it is then sent and re-compressed by the receiving machine. This significantly improves the appearance of graphic images or photos and shortens fax transmission time - especially useful when faxing large documents. The 4130 also offers a "dial while scanning" feature that starts sending the first page while scanning the rest of the document. When equipped with a second phone line, the unit can send and receive simultaneously, giving users twice the power.

The 4130 comes equipped with a large 8mb (650 page) document memory that can be upgraded to 16mb (1,330 page). This powerful memory supports many specialized, money saving functions, such as fax broadcasting and batch transmission. This new multi-function device also includes a database polling feature that allow users to retrieve a document directly from the memory of the host fax and is ideal for frequently requested documents like price lists, calendar of events or directions. With polling, the caller bears all telephone charges. Also included is an auto reduction feature that automatically formats images to fit the page and additional security features such as confidential mailboxes, department codes, and a programmable junk fax barrier.

A 4130 user no longer needs to travel to leave his office to make distribution copies. A 12 page-per-minute digital copier, with a zoom feature from 50-200%, and a multi-copy capacity of 99 copies is well suited for most desktop copy applications. In environments where there is a need to copy odd sized originals like book excerpts, reference materials, manuals, or schematics (manufacturing, retail, education) this task is made easier by the stationary flatbed scanner. The unit has an automatic document feeder, electronic sorting, and 400-sheet paper capacity that can be doubled to 800 sheets.

Pitney Bowes fax and copier customers also benefit from the superior service, training and support provided by the leading worldwide corporate fax supplier. All sales and service staff are Pitney Bowes employees, and will install the equipment, program the basic functions, and run a complete test operation from the moment it is in place. At the time of installation, Pitney Bowes Marketing/Service Representatives will conduct free on-site training to introduce employees to all aspects of the equipment's features that include programming, functional operations, replacement supplies, and work with employees to realize the full value of the equipment.

In 1982, Pitney Bowes created the most comprehensive, technologically advanced facsimile center in existence to help insure minimal downtime and disruption. The Diagnostic Center is available 24 hours/7days and can resolve 75% of service problems without a field call, saving customers valuable time and money.

The energy-saving 4130 fully meets the EPA's pollution-reducing ENERGY STAR standard, by automatically reducing power consumption during inactive period, and is manufactured without using ozone-depleting substances.
