STAMFORD, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 7, 2009--
Pitney
Bowes, Inc. (NYSE:PBI) today announced that two of the Company’s technology
innovators have been selected as winners of the TechAmerica
2009 Innovator Award for the Internet category. Arthur R. Berrill,
vice president, Advanced Concepts and Technology, and Sherif Ahmed,
software architect, Advanced Concepts and Technology at Pitney Bowes,
were honored last evening at the 50th TechAmerica
Innovator Awards and Benefit. The annual event celebrates technology
innovators for their contribution to industry and society, and is hosted
by TechAmerica, a leading U.S. technology industry association,
representing approximately 1,500 member companies driving innovation
worldwide.
Berrill is the visionary, and Ahmed the architect and co-creator, of Pitney
Bowes FireLocator, a free, public service Web site that disseminates
data and information regarding wildfires to residents, government
agencies, and media outlets – helping users to make rapid, well-informed
decisions regarding wildfire threats.
“Pitney Bowes has a long history
of innovation and corporate
citizenship,” said Berrill. “We are deeply honored to receive this
award for providing the general public with a tool that can potentially
help save lives and property,” he concluded.
Wildfires and bushfires all too frequently flare up and menace parts of
California and Australia respectively, forcing some residents to flee
their homes. Pitney Bowes FireLocator provides users with dynamic,
current information on the situation of wildfires as well as information
on previous instances.
“Pitney Bowes FireLocator innovatively leverages Pitney Bowes Business
Insight’s expertise in location intelligence and its understanding of
rich Internet technologies -- such as Microsoft Silverlight technology
and Microsoft Bing Maps -- to deliver the functionality demanded by the
Web-based solutions of the future,” explained Ahmed. “FireLocator
provides a high level of interactivity, integration and ease-of-use, for
a compelling user experience.”
