Pitney Bowes Introduces Electronic Delivery Confirmation for U.S. Postal Service Priority Mail

STAMFORD, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 23, 2001--

  • Digital connectivity is at the heart of the global revolution in metering

  • Low volume mailers can now enjoy the savings and convenience of electronic access to the USPS

Pitney Bowes Inc. (NYSE: PBI), the global leader in mail and message management, has introduced a better way for business mailers to use and track critical documents using the U.S. Postal Services' Priority Mail(R) product. Pitney Bowes' new digital metering systems have a Delivery Confirmation feature which processes Priority Mail pieces electronically, saving businesses the 40(cent) per piece tracking fee and eliminating time associated with trips to the post office.

"This exclusive technological breakthrough is part of the Pitney Bowes global strategy to transform traditional postage meters into communication portals for mailers and posts." states Tim Bates, Vice President, Marketing, Pitney Bowes Mailing Systems. "And, the recently introduced DM Series(TM) Digital Mailing Systems make this new technology available and affordable for low volume mailers.

Though the USPS has provided Delivery Confirmation Service for Priority Mail through its retail windows for some time now, the DM Series(TM) Digital Mailing System gives low-to-mid volume mailers electronic access to the Postal Services Delivery Confirmation Service without ever leaving the office. Mailers simply enter a tracking number on the meter's control panel, and the intelligent meter transmits the data via modem to the USPS. Then, within 24 hours, users can track the status of their Priority Mail at www.usps.com.

"When we talked with our customers, we found that many were using overnight services just for tracking, not necessarily for delivery speed. Now, mailers can use the lower cost alternative, Priority Mail, and still get the benefit of delivery confirmation without leaving their office," added Bates.
