Pitney Bowes Introduces New Family of Secure Mailing Solutions

STAMFORD, Conn., Apr 30, 2002 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ --

* Mail Containing Potentially Dangerous Metallic Components Can Be Identified * Final Delivery of Questionable/Unexpected Material Can Be Prevented * Employee Confidence And Comfort Can Be Improved

Pitney Bowes Inc. (NYSE: PBI), the global leader in mail and document messaging solutions, today announced the launch of two easy to use solutions to enhance security in mail centers across the country -- The ImageAlert(TM) Mail Verification System and the SecureScan(TM) Mail Security Scanner. According to a recent study done by Booz Allen Hamilton, "How Corporate Security Is Reshaping The Post-9/11 CEO Agenda", at least three-quarters of the executives sampled expressed concern for the day-to-day activity of mail processing.

With this in mind, Pitney Bowes has introduced a suite of products that allow mail center employees to identify and track documents and packages containing potentially hazardous material. "Pitney Bowes currently invests more in the research and development of secure mailing technologies than any other company in the industry," said Timothy Bates, Vice President Customer Marketing, Global Mailing Systems. "We are, therefore, well positioned to provide the products and solutions for improving mail center safety."

The SecureScan Mail Security Scanner is an easy to use, desktop solution that delivers both audible and visual alarms when it detects potentially hazardous metal components. These objects might consist of energy sources, wire, detonators, circuitry or other components that could be used to fabricate a letter bomb. Harmless items like paperclips or staples, however, will not typically trigger the alarm; therefore, the system with not needlessly disrupt operations.

The ImageAlert Mail Verification System uses imaging and email to speed communications between the mail center, the intended recipient and security personnel when a potentially suspicious mail piece is identified. After scanning the image of the item in question, the mail center employee selects the email address for both the recipient and security. ImageAlert then sends the email and logs the transaction in a history file with an electronic image of the mail piece displayed; the addressees can determine the appropriate disposition.
