Pitney Bowes Named EPA WasteWise Program Champion

STAMFORD, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 16, 2000--Pitney Bowes Inc. (NYSE: PBI) has been selected by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) WasteWise Program as a Program Champion for the third year in a row.

The EPA launched WasteWise in 1994 as a voluntary partnership program to help businesses and institutions find practical methods to reduce municipal solid waste, increase recycling, and encourage the buying and manufacturing of products with recycled content. WasteWise will acknowledge the noteworthy waste reduction achievements of Pitney Bowes at the 2000 WasteWise Awards and Recognition Ceremony held in October in Washington, DC.

"We are proud that WasteWise has recognized our efforts for three years in a row," said Michael J. Critelli, Chairman and CEO of Pitney Bowes Inc. "Our strong environmental stewardship initiatives are important to all of our business constituents, including employees and shareholders. Incorporating environmentally friendly business practices into our products and services creates an additional value-add for customers, and is a key element of our customer-centric business strategy."

Pitney Bowes, which initiated the program in 1997, now boasts 18 participating facilities across four divisions. In 1999, these 18 facilities reported a 75% recycling rate whereas most municipalities, according to the US EPA, are at a 27% recycling rate. Over 818 tons of paper were recycled last year by Pitney Bowes facilities which translates into the preservation of 13,906 trees and 3.3 million kilowatts of energy and the reduction of air pollutants by 24.5 tons.

This sponsorship is just a part of Pitney Bowes' award winning environmental strategy. Pitney Bowes was recently recognized by EPA as the Green Light's Partner of the Year, for its commitment to preserving natural resources and by reducing energy consumption through installation of energy-efficient lighting. In 1997, Pitney Bowes embarked on its Managing Energy Wisely Program. Since then, annual energy consumption on weather normalized basis has been reduced by close to 15%, or 66 billion BTU's. This equals the energy used by approximately 640 households.

Part of an Elite Club

Pitney Bowes joins other national WasteWise Award winners that include Anheuser-Busch, Bell Atlantic, Lucent Technologies, and the Walt Disney Company. Since the program's inception 6 years ago, partners have reduced their municipal solid waste by more than 35 million tons, helping to prevent the release of greenhouse gases by an estimated 25 million metric tons - equal to removing 19 million cars from the road for one year.
