Pitney Bowes Presses Intellectual Property Claims

    Business Editors

STAMFORD, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 10, 1999--Pitney Bowes Inc. (NYSE: PBI) announced today that it has filed suit against E-Stamp Corp. of Palo Alto, Calif. in the United States District Court for the District of Delaware. The complaint charges E-Stamp with infringement of Pitney Bowes patents.

Pitney Bowes has a long-standing practice of licensing its intellectual property. "We have always made pioneering technology accessible to the marketplace, including licensing key postage metering technologies worldwide," said company spokesperson Sheryl Y. Battles, Executive Director, External Affairs. "During the past year, we have actively engaged in discussions with E-Stamp and other marketers of computer-based postal products, to grant patent licenses for the Pitney Bowes-developed technology used in PC meters and virtual meters."

"We will continue to seek common ground with E-Stamp," Ms. Battles continued, "and we will work toward a solution that addresses their needs while ensuring that Pitney Bowes receives full and fair compensation for the use of its intellectual property. In the absence of that solution, our obligation to protect Pitney Bowes' technology investments and safeguard shareholder value requires that we take this action."

Pitney Bowes is renowned for bringing numerous inventions and improvements in mailing and paper handling technologies to market. Its development efforts have yielded more than 3,000 patents worldwide. Pitney Bowes is the inventor of many of the innovative technologies used in computer and virtual metering.

Pitney Bowes is a $4.2 billion global provider of informed mail and messaging management. For more information about the company, visit www.pitneybowes.com.
