Pitney Bowes Selected by Bangor Hydro for E-Billing

DANBURY, Conn. and BANGOR, Maine, Jan 3, 2002 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Pitney Bowes, Inc. (NYSE: PBI), the world leader in integrated mail and document management solutions, will host the electronic bill presentment and payment site for Bangor Hydro-Electric, a regulated electricity transmission and distribution company serving 110,000 customers in central and eastern Maine.

Pitney Bowes' D3(TM) solution allows businesses to enhance their current paper bill presentment systems with an electronic bill presentment and payment method for customers who prefer to view and pay bills online. D3 helps these businesses reduce document distribution costs and speed their presentment and payment processes. On average, customers using EBPP pay their bills nine days earlier than those using paper-based billing and payment, reducing float and thereby increasing revenue for the biller.

D3 is offered and supported by Pitney Bowes docSense, the leader in digital presentment software and hosting services. The docSense site-hosting service enables enterprises to seamlessly bridge paper and digital customer communications. "We are extremely gratified that the BHE Company has entrusted us to provide them with their electronic billing solution," said Karl Schumacher, president of Pitney Bowes docSense. "It is a strong validation of our technology as well as the Pitney Bowes corporate strategy of web-enabling our customers' mission critical business processes."

"Bangor Hydro based this decision on the advanced technology of Pitney Bowes' Digital Document Delivery solution and the flexible implementation options they offer," said Joe Giard, manager of Retail Customer Service for Bangor Hydro. "Pitney Bowes docSense has an excellent reputation for delivering online billing solutions and their site-hosting service enables us to offer EBPP to our customers efficiently and cost effectively."

Pitney Bowes docSense will leverage a strategic alliance with CheckFree (Nasdaq: CKFR), a leading electronic payment provider. Pitney Bowes docSense is a Certified Premier partner of CheckFree, which offers consolidated access to a comprehensive distribution and payment network of nearly 275 financial services companies. Pitney Bowes docSense will also provide a "biller direct" capability that enables users to pay bills at BHE's website.

"Pitney Bowes' established history as a print service bureau, and an installed base of paper billers provides the firm with significant industry knowledge and recognition," said Andrei Arkhipov, financial technologies analyst, Aberdeen Group. " Pitney Bowes has gained the technology to be considered one of the premier invoicing and payment solutions providers in its targeted markets. Besides the technology edge, the firm's income statement and balance sheet make it a powerful Internet invoicing force, which many will find hard to reckon with."
