Pitney Bowes Unveils Mail Management Software

STAMFORD, Conn., Feb 27, 2003 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ --

Helps Mailers Cost Effectively Protect, Grow and Acquire New Customers

Pitney Bowes Inc. (NYSE: PBI) today introduced SmartMailer(TM) 7.0, a user-friendly mail management software that enables mailers to better manage their mail flow. SmartMailer 7.0 is easy to use and enables businesses to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of their mailings with enhanced address database functions and the ability to send combined mailings, and to save money by eliminating duplicate, and reducing undeliverable, addresses. According to the United States Postal Service, $1.5 billion dollars in postal costs are attributable annually to undeliverable as addressed mail due to poor customer data. About 5.4 billion pieces of mail are undeliverable, representing 3% of mail volume. In addition, while 98% of the mail volume today is bar-coded, over 23% of the mail still contains address errors or problems that can impact efficient delivery.

"As the mail and document management leader, Pitney Bowes is committed to providing leading-edge, integrated solutions that deliver real value for customers," said Timothy M. Bates, Vice President, Customer Marketing. "SmartMailer (TM) 7.0 enables mailers to cost-effectively use the mail to retain their customer base, grow the value of every customer they have and acquire new customers."

A key feature of SmartMailer(TM) 7.0 is Duplicate Detection, which finds duplicate names and addresses and flags them for the mailer to delete, eliminating unnecessary and costly mailings. SmartMailer(TM) 7.0 software also has access to every "deliverable" address range in the U.S.A. Eliminating duplicate, and reducing undeliverable, mail pieces leads to a considerable cost savings.

SmartMailer(TM) 7.0 offers mailers a variety of presort methods approved by the USPS for discounts. In addition to its valuable mail management benefits, SmartMailer(TM) 7.0 helps mailers create more professional and action-oriented envelopes by using logos and graphics that can increase openability and response rates.

    About SmartMailer

     * Address It Correctly and You Save -- With SmartMailer(TM) 7.0,
subscribing customers receive USPS National Database updates six times
throughout the year to help insure accuracy. The software can also
correct addresses and ZIP +4 Codes. Additionally, it converts addresses
to the standard format recommended by the Post Office for automated
handling which enhances the USPS's ability to make a successful
       delivery happen every time.
     * New Mailing Wizard Adds To Ease-Of-Use -- An alternative user interface
has also been introduced and is geared for novice users. With the
interface, the user walks through each of the pre-determined processing
stages before continuing to the next step and determines if each one is
necessary for the particular mailing. With this method, users can take
advantage of all the features offered without being overwhelmed.
     * Presort For Postal Discounts -- The latest software enhancement
includes the ability to perform combined mailings. This enables the
user to select more than one presort method for SmartMailer(TM) 7.0 to
use during its presort operation. By combining mailings instead of
performing each as a separate task, the need for the user to rerun the
operation is greatly reduced. This ability to combine mailings can
translate into a larger postage discount. A Presort Setup Wizard also
helps configure the presort options, adding simplicity and savings for
an all around "smart mailing" solution.
