Pitney Bowes Responds to Increased Focus on Digital Document Delivery - Hard Copy and Electronic Distribution Essential for Secure Communication

STAMFORD, Conn., Oct. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Pitney Bowes Inc. (NYSE: PBI), the leader in integrated mail and document management solutions, is today making available additional information about the benefits of Digital Document Delivery. Pitney Bowes docSense will distribute this information to their customers via direct marketing, online at http://www.docsense.com or by calling 1-877-536-3736. This information will help high volume mailers seeking advice on how to electronically supplement hard copy distribution of their mission critical documents including invoices, bills and statements.

Seen chiefly as a way to reduce handling costs and provide added convenience to customers, security issues may drive digital presentment to the type of growth that industry analysts first predicted when it was dubbed the Internet's next "killer app" in the late nineties.

"From our Postage-by-Phone payment system, to the inherent security provided by metered mail, Pitney Bowes has been at the forefront of developing safe mail and messaging solutions," stated Karl Schumacher, president, Pitney Bowes docSense. "Additionally, Pitney Bowes has made significant investments to develop an expertise in the digital distribution of documents. Through Pitney Bowes docSense, we can provide mailers with the solutions, talent, and experience needed to help companies respond to the evolving delivery preferences of their customers, and channel current communications via e-mail and the web."

Pitney Bowes launched docSense, which offers software and services for bridging paper and web-based communications, in February 2000 to offer electronic bill presentment and payment solutions for Business-to-Business and Business-to-Consumer billers. docSense leverages Pitney Bowes' experience and leadership in the production document messaging market. For example, Digital Document Delivery (D3) is integrated with the company's flagship product, StreamWeaver, the world's leading print stream conditioning software. StreamWeaver provides print suppression, bar coding and data stream parsing, which allows billers to split the hard copy stream for simultaneous delivery in paper and electronic form, thereby avoiding a dual process.

"Pitney Bowes is clearly making a strategic commitment to its docSense organization," said Avi Greenfield, an analyst with Doculabs, an independent analyst and consulting firm. "Pitney Bowes understands that e-presentment is integral to any organization's overall e-commerce strategy, and with this in mind has architected its Digital Document Delivery (D3) solution around the J2EE specification and Enterprise Java Beans. The combination of solid technology and the financial stability and global reach of Pitney Bowes makes docSense a serious contender in the e-billing market."

Pitney Bowes docSense is the company's global provider of premier solutions for the creation and distribution of efficient and effective documents in paper and digital form.

Pitney Bowes Inc. is a $4 billion global provider of integrated mail, messaging and document management solutions headquartered in Stamford, Connecticut. The company serves over 2 million businesses of all sizes through dealer and direct operations.
