Martin's Speech Links Pitney Bowes Commitment to World Community
                with the Key Themes of the 2004 World Assembly

STAMFORD, Conn., May 4 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Pitney Bowes Inc. (NYSE: PBI) today announced that Mr. Murray Martin, President of Pitney Bowes' Global Mailstream Solutions, will give the introductory address at the United Way International's (UWI) 2004 World Assembly this week in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Mr. Martin will have the honor of introducing Mr. Jorge Santini, the Mayor of San Juan, this year's host city.

The United Way International's 2004 World Assembly will convene on Wednesday, May 5th and adjourn on Friday, May 7th. Mr. Martin, a member of UWI's Board of Directors, will introduce Mayor Santini in his speech during opening day ceremonies on the morning of May 6th.

The World Assembly is held every two years. It brings together member organizations, corporations, foundations, NGO's and volunteers from more than 45 countries and territories in an effort to build effective social investment strategies and share best practices. Pitney Bowes has been a major sponsor of UWI's World Assembly for the past three events.

This year's World Assembly, considered one of the most important and groundbreaking in UWI's history, will introduce a new UWI President and CEO; will gather participants as a network of regions instead of individual countries; and will allow attendees to network more effectively and view exhibits that are more relevant to their needs.

In addition to introducing Mayor Santini, Mr. Martin's speech will highlight the key themes of the 2004 World Assembly and explain how Pitney Bowes has embraced these objectives in its commitment to the global community. Mr. Martin will detail the outstanding leadership qualities of Pitney Bowes employees. He will describe Pitney Bowes' strategic partnership with the community to improve literacy, develop a diverse workplace, and encourage employee involvement, and he will discuss the company's overall efforts to build resilient communities.
