Pitney Bowes General Counsel Receives First Ever ``Legends in Law'' Award
The Burton Awards Honor Michele Coleman Mayes for Legal Expertise
STAMFORD, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 5, 2007--Pitney Bowes Inc. (NYSE: PBI) today announced that Senior Vice President and General Counsel Michele Coleman Mayes received the Burton Awards' "Legends in Law" Award at a ceremony held last evening at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. In its first year as an award category, the "Legends in Law" Award recognizes outstanding Corporate General Counsels at large companies. Mayes was one of five recipients honored by the Burton Awards, a national nonprofit awards program.
The Burton Awards used several criteria to select award recipients: reputation in the legal community; reputation as an expert in the specific area of law practiced; complexity and scope of matters handled; the global or national importance of those matters; and leadership.
General Counsels from Target Corporation, Bank of America Corporation, Forest City Enterprises, Inc. and Deutsche Bank AG were also recognized during the awards ceremony.
"It is a distinct honor and pleasure to accept the Legends in Law award," said Mayes. "I owe a great deal of gratitude to many people who helped me to become successful in my career. From my professors at the University of Michigan Law School to various mentors in the workplace, and past and present colleagues, all of these people offered inspiration and contributed to my receipt of this award."
As Senior Vice President and General Counsel for Pitney Bowes, Mayes is responsible for all legal affairs. This includes oversight of the company's Government Affairs group, the Office of the Corporate Secretary and its Corporate Governance function. Additionally, she has oversight for such diverse areas as ethics and compliance, privacy and the environment. Prior to joining Pitney Bowes, Mayes held leadership positions at Colgate-Palmolive, Unisys, Burroughs and the U.S. Department of Justice.
Mayes is a member of the American Bar Association, where she formerly served as Co-Chair of the Arbitration Committee and as a member of the Commission on Women in the Profession. She currently serves on several boards, including two nonprofits, the Business Council of Southwestern Connecticut and Legal Momentum. She also serves on the board of Assurant, Inc.
Proskauer Rose, one of the nation's largest law firms, nominated Mayes for the "Legends in Law" award.
